welcome to my site. Updated 24-11 2008

My latest paintings "not dead", "solving bones", "Morningglory" and "requiem" are on display. 'Wind' is a series of poetic photography about forgiving and loss: cherryblossom in the wind. "Bamboo64" are photo's from the bamboo in front of my studio. "Windings" is magic from tendrils. "Wintergarden" is about Elizabeth's garden in the early winter, "whitefrost" about the same subject a few days later. "ink and pears" is a study in ink, photography and pears. "Between the showers" tells the sory of life on a wet summerday.

The images are shown by "Flash". You can return to this page by the navigation-knob on your browser.

"een reportage van Brecht Schaafsma haar werk" is a report about the work of a very near by living artist, Brecht Schaafsma.

about the art of l.j. dalmolen: ljdart

First, for the fun and the vanity of it all, some artist-statements.
Many times I have been asked for my artist-statement. Somehow an artist needs to make a statement about his statements. Hmm, seems quite tautological to me. But, it appears that a contemporary artist needs this fashionable making of totem.
I can make many conceptual stands, all according with the situation. I decided to dig a bit in art-history to collect statements and stands that appealed to me. And after all, it appears I have some ideals too.

For artists aesthetics is like ornithology for birds. Barnet Newman

I am not an abstract painter?.. I am not interested in the relations between colour and form or whatever. Mark Rothko

A lustful relation to things that exist. Mark Rothko

It is not the eye, it is the mind, which the painter of genius desires to address. Sir Joshua Reynolds

The most important tool the artist fashions through constant practice is faith in his ability to produce miracles when they are needed. Mark Rothko

I do not seek, I find. Picasso

I am consciously an ecletistic painter. Willem de Kooning

Stile is swindling. It is a terrible idea from Van Doesburg and Mondriaan to try to force a style. Willem de Kooning

"Draw them as you see them". And he corrected them to their true size. I tried to draw is he did, but I had to wipe them all the time, and after half an hour the pears had shrinked to the size I had made before. Giacometti and his father

The danger is, that we forget about art and only construct parables, that we become wise man in stead of artists. Cleas Oldenburg

In the western world the concepts of art and science are diametrically opposed. Based on this fact we have to find a solution for this polarisation of opinions, better opinion needs to be found. Joseph Beuys

I try to make my sense for the organic rhythm of things stronger, so I can feel the panthetic pulse and stream of the blood of nature - in trees, in the air, in animals. Franz Marc

In the future all art will be fashion. Max Ernst

Arts is a bypass from the dream to reality. Sigmund Freud

If you (poets) call painting silent poetry, then the painter may say that poetry is blind painting. Leonardo Da Vinci

We all forget about the evident, like a fish forgets about the water.

Making art is stepping over the emptiness of cognition. Art makes things intelligible and makes us intelligent. LJD

Some biographical notes

my full name is Lambertus Jilt Dalmolen. In many cases I sign with ljd.
I was born on the 28th of July 1954 in the province-town of Groningen in the North of the Netherlands. I loved drawing and reading and built my own world. At a young age I left home. Due to the generous educational system in the seventies I could attend the academy of arts. Halfway I came to the conclusion that insight was what I needed, and got a masters degree in anthropology (1988). After finishing those studies I started to develop myself as an artist.
Now I live on the country in the north of the Netherlands, on the borders of a small nature-reserve.

Education
Academy of arts, Leeuwarden 1976 - 1980
masters degree in cultural anthropology, Amsterdam 1980 - 1988
Several courses in drawing and painting, Amsterdam 1980 - 1988
private lessons in painting, Amsterdam 1981 - 1984
all things auto-didactic

Field of work
Painting, design, semiotics, photography, research and development, poetry.

Subject
The mass-media abuse of imagination is felt as a “stealing of dreams” and I take a stand against that rape of mind. In my work I return to the roots of imagination and give some durable sources for contemplation. For that I use, combined with my artistic skills, knowledge of anthropology, psychology and spiritual disciplines.

I made several exhibitions in the Netherlands, Spain and Germany.

In 1996 my first poetry bundle "measuring eternity" (sorry, in dutch) was published. In the beginning of this year (15-03 2008) a book with an essay and a full-page photo-essay from my hand about the eco cathedral is presented in the Frisian Museum. Co-authors are the culture philosopher Huub Mous and the artist / prof. H.C. Phd. Louis Leroy. More about it on " stichting tijd".
